SKIS UPCYCLING – CREATIVE TRANSFORMATION

What is the lifespan of utility items and where does the manufacturer's product liability end? How can the things we interact with every day continue to serve us beyond their shelf life? The Majesty Skies Re//Defined post-competition exhibition is a creative attempt at answering these questions.

Announced by the Polish ski manufacturer MAJESTY, Majesty Skies Re//Defined is the 2nd edition of a competition for a functional design made from used skis, which culminates in the presented post-competition exhibition.

During the competition, the participants designed and, in the second stage, produced a utility item, using used skis as the main raw material. Their task was to combine aesthetics with functionality and workmanship.

The presented works boldly go beyond the boundaries of the traditional approach to ski equipment.  In doing so, they fit in with the brand's mission, which is to create technically and aesthetically perfect ski products, but also to care for reducing their environmental impact.

The competition and the exhibition of competition entries are intended to encourage reflection on ways to promote the idea of sustainability and to inspire the exploration of new possibilities for using used products as a raw material for the re-use.

The exhibition presents unique works, each telling its own story, reflecting not only the designer's talent and vision, but also the spirit of upcycling and environmental.

The project consists of a set of three waste sorting bins designed for public spaces such as modern areas that connect different activities or slopes and trails.

Each bin has its own distinct shape suggesting the type of waste it is intended for: square for paper, round for glass, and hexagonal for plastic. The bins were created using exclusively recycled materials, fully embracing the principles of upcycling.

There is always some equipment in use, and the reCYCYLE rack made from recycled skis keeps it readily available.

Those who keep their skis at hand during winter, eagerly awaiting every "powder alert" to hit the slopes and indulge in the white bliss, are typically restless souls whose longing for freedom and adventure extends beyond the season. When the sun melts the last patches of snow, skis are replaced by a bike (CYCLE), climbing gear, a SUP board, or running shoes. There is always some equipment in use, and the reCYCYLE rack made from recycled skis keeps it readily available. By utilizing discarded skis (reCYCLING), it evokes nostalgia for the winter season and serves as a motivation to stay in shape. After all, cycling strengthens the legs, running enhances fitness, climbing builds strength and resilience. Thus, as summer follows winter and winter follows summer, season after season, cyclically (CYCLE), the rack can serve as a companion for favorite sporting pleasures.

The design is inspired by the diversity of floral forms. The three lampshades are variations on the shape of a flower calyx.

In the spirit of upcycling, the implementation incorporates not only skis but also a dismantled wooden turntable as a structural element of the lamp tripod.

The "Ski Hammock Chair" was born – a structure composed of skis with a custom-made fabric seat crafted from an old kite.

It was important to me that the object created from skis had significant practical value and could serve a purpose long after the competition. As a result, the "Ski Hammock Chair" was born – a structure composed of skis with a custom-made fabric seat crafted from an old kite. I made an effort to minimize any alterations to the ski's original structure and instead leverage their inherent flexibility and durability.

The freestanding coat rack is a project that works well in both home and public spaces. It can be used wherever we want to showcase clothing or securely store it. The project was entirely realized using skis, most of which were left in their original form.

The top panel features thirteen round openings for hangers, ensuring proper spacing between products and preventing them from being squeezed or wrinkled. The design also includes a lower shelf for shoes and the ability to hang hats or other items on the ends of the top panel and on the supports of the structure.

The project aims to create a multifunctional utility object.

Snowflex is an open-form object.  The user can adjust its layout and even function according to their needs.  The elements are axially connected using a rope, allowing for multiple folding, unfolding, and vertical expansion of the structure. The presented stool is one of the object's functions, but it can also serve as an auxiliary table, planter, or display stand, while individual modules can become wall decorations. The design utilizes the changing thickness of the ski along its entire length, which allows for a flexible core. This enables us to perform spine-relieving movements while sitting without compromising stability.

A hammock created with the idea of making something comfortable and functional out of skis.

When creating the project, the author took into account the appearance of the skis, which is suitable for skiing on their basis and uses these properties, in addition to this determination. You would like it to be outside its natural environment, in a warm climate, a place to rest from the sun.

In the final product, she connected the skis with strands of a strong cord, simplifying the construction as much as possible. Thanks to their flexibility, they adapt to the position of the body, and the strength and size allow for rest for two people at a time.
